Sheriff fines man for photographing drunk, vomiting woman in public

Carlos Miller
Three months after police in the United Kingdom were given the authority to set their own restrictions on public photography, a sheriff in Scotland fined a man for photographing a drunk woman as she threw up outside a pub.

Sheriff Kenneth Hogg fined Sebastian Przygodzki 100 pounds because he claimed it was “exceptionally unchivalrous” to photograph Rebecca Smith as she sat on a curb with her head between her legs.

While it is not clear whether one of the 4.2 million public surveillance cameras throughout Britain caught Smith on video, it is clear that laws against public photography outweigh laws against public drunkenness.

Przygodzki, 28, who moved to Scotland two years ago from Krakow, told police he had spent the day taking photographs of performers at the Edinburgh festival, which was in full swing at the time. When he came across the woman, he considered it “taking a photo of another view of Edinburgh”, said his lawyer, Andy Houston. But Sheriff Kenneth Hogg said the matter “could be best described as exceptionally unchivalrous”. “The lady concerned was entitled to her privacy and not to have a passing stranger take a photograph,” said the sheriff. “I’m going to impose a fine to remind him chivalry is not dead and when somebody is in distress you leave them to it.”

Here in the United States, excessive public drunkenness, whether it is from a man or woman, is sure to be exploited on the Internet, as the following photo found through Google proves.

Now I don’t really have an opinion to whether the woman should have had a right to privacy in that situation. But I do know that 100 pounds was extremely excessive. It translates to about $174 in American dollars. For a couple of picture of a drunken person in the land that invented whiskey. It’s overkill.

But it was the Irish who invented Whiskey. Of course with a name like Scott, you might be a bit biased toward the Scotch.

However, I spent 18 months in Dublin, so I might be a little biased myself.

So… what law was broken?

Apparently he was fined because the officer was offended?

who is that naked drunk woman lying on the park bench in that famous picture? does anyone know?

Great Britain...Chivalry died in the trenches of World War One. Abuse of power, tyranny, & restrictions on freedom should have been your best lessons learned losing the American Colonies, & all the other places where the sun was to never set on your empire.

“So… what law was broken?”

The law against “exceptional lack of chivalry,” of course. Duh.

I lik the chivarly law. But when you have an extensive, and in the uk it is, network of government cameras watching you … it’s ridiculous you can’t take pictures. I don’t believe the press should have more rights that the public, but I certainly don’t think the government should have more rights than the public.

The government can watch you, but you can’t watch anybody yourself.
And Scotland did invent whiskey, the Irish just purchase most of it. And yes I am biased.

Exceptionally unchivalrous what a joke, the slapper was pissed out of her head throwing up outside a pub, she aint no lady so normal rules don’t apply!

Don’t you love the Irish, the first recorded Whisky Distillery was Irish, which doesn’t necessarily mean they made it first, but anyway us Scots make it so much better.

@William K Wallace, 8.

To say the Irish invented “whisky” is funny. They spell it “whiskey”. Yeah, I’m pedantic. But it is generally seen as true that the Irish invented whisky, Irish munks to be presice. And I’m impartial, as I’m Norwegian.

I agree you scots do a better job, though. Personally, I’m partial to Islay. And Arran. And Glenmorangie.

Nice nick, by the way.
