Sony lets four lens manufacturers in on the E-mount secret

NEX-5_12

It’s lenses-a-go-go at the moment. Yesterday we learned that Carl Zeiss and Schneider-Kreuznach were going to produce Micro Four Thirds-compatible lenses, (as well as a clutch of new Canon lenses coming out) today it’s Sony’s turn for a lens announcement. From 1 April 2011, they’ll release the spec for their E-mount lenses, for free, to four of the big names in optics: Carl Zeiss, Cosina, Sigma, and Tamron.

If you use an NEX-3, NEX-5, NEX-VG10, or any other type of E-mount camera that Sony might happen to produce in the future, you’ll be able to spread your lens love amongst a selection of optics manufacturers.

Sony says that by increasing the number of lenses people can put on their cameras, they can ‘further increase the enjoyment of photography and video shooting among an even wider range of users.’ Yes, yes this is probably true. But it also keeps them competitive with the Micro Four Thirds posse.

Or, another way to put it, Sony doesn't have the capability to produce the required lenses to take the NEX platform further.

I'm actually quite keen on the NEX cameras, but lack of fast, sharp, pancake lenses stops me from buying one.

Hopefully this would help in expanding NEX lens choices witout resorting to adaptors.
