The Photographer's New Years Resolutions, Part 3: Get Creative
Today's 3rd and final New Years Resolution is an easy one, at least in theory: Get creative.
There are a million ways to interpret this simple idea, but what it boils down to is this: move outside of your comfort area. If you shoot family portraits, go shoot strangers. If you shoot macro shots of computer chips, go shoot landscapes. If you shoot... well you get the idea.
Here are some simple ideas (not my own) to help you get started:
1. 100 Strangers: Go out and talk to people, strangers on the street and ask them if you can take their portrait. Don't stop until you get 100. Get ready for more no's than yeses (that word looks funny spelled out doesn't it?).
2. 365 Project: Pick a theme (self portraits, colors, street signs, whatever) and take a shot based on that theme every day for a year!
3. A-Z: Take a photo of 26 objects, one for each letter of the alphabet. Example: an apple, a balloon, a Columbus Day Parade etc... Or, take 26 photos, one photo of an object that looks like each letter of the alphabet.
4. Least used lens: Take the lens you use the least, and only shoot with it. Remember: Get creative! Pull out that ultra wide and really learn how to use it. Or maybe it's your 10 pound 400mm f/2.8 that you only take out of the closet once or twice a year. Go use it.
Have any other ideas? Put them in the comments below. And remember, step out of your comfort zone. Don't pick number 1 if you already are comfortable shooting strangers. Get creative!
