Toronto Cop Suing Over Mocking Videos

"Officer Bubbles" feared bubbles blown in his direction

First, Constable Adam Josephs threatened to arrest a young woman for blowing bubbles in his direction during the G20 protest in Toronto earlier this year.

Now he is threatening to sue Youtube for "ridicule" over a series of cartoon videos that have been posted mocking his overly aggressive demeanor.

Josephs, who towers over his fellow officers, is asking for $1.2 million.

Apparently, someone blew something a little stronger in his direction than bubbles because he has clearly lost all sense of reality.

According to The Globe and Mail:

In his statement of claim, Constable Josephs alleges the cartoons have subjected him to ridicule, and have resulted in threats against himself and his family. He also seeks to compel YouTube to reveal the identities of the person who created and posted the cartoon – identified by the moniker “ThePMOCanada” – and the identities of several people who posted comments in response.

On Friday, his lawyer said the lawsuit was in its preliminary stages and he was still in discussions with YouTube to resolve it.

“This level of ridicule goes beyond what is reasonable,” James Zibarras said. “The reason we brought the lawsuit is that people have the right to protect themselves against this kind of harassment.”

The animations in question depict a policeman identified as “A. Josephs” arresting various people – including Barack Obama and Santa Claus – and beating up a news photographer while funk music plays in the background.

One of the defendants in the suit, a Canadian man named Todd Mara who left a comment under a username, is profiled in this piece by The Star.
While the original Youtube account broadcasting the cartoon videos has since been shut down, the videos can be seen on another Youtube channel titled MisterOfficerBubbles.

A Facebook page titled Officer Bubbles McButtHurt has also been created in his honor. As of this writing, it has 534 people who follow it.
The woman in the original video was eventually arrested although it is not clear if it was for the bubbles or for some other unrelated non-violent, non-criminal act.

Below is one of the cartoon videos showing Mister Officer Bubbles beating up a photographer.

As is always the case in situations like this by bringing it to court he's just ensuring a wider distribution of the videos.

STREISAND EFFECT GENERATORS! ENGAGE!

Yep, no better way to spin those up than with a lawsuit.

Hopefully the /b/tards will get in on it.

I believe there is a good chance they will. /b/ doesn't usually let things slide when you try to sue the internet (or mess with harmless little girls blowing bubbles). (eg. Adam L. Goldstein)

What an incredible douche bag! Big tough guy all intimidated by the little girls bubbles. Love those cartoons, they caught his asshole attitude perfectly.

I kind of see it both ways.

If you're a pedestrian and someone is blowing bubbles, you can walk away. If you're a cop you have to stand there and do your job, this person is blowing bubbles into your face and annoying you, and yeah a bubbles in your face is physically irritating and distracting you from your duties.

They're human beings too (as far as we know). You really expect to be able to do that and for them to smile and stand there and take it? What if you walked into someone's store and started doing that to the cashier; a person who is in a similar situation and has a job to do and can't walk away? You'd be thrown out, eventually.

With that said, his attitude wasn't very friendly, but he did politely give her quite a few warnings and explained himself. What did you want him to do?

As for her being arrested for it, I can't comment on that, because we don't know the details.

Mommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm! They are mocking me.
What a retarded cop he is!

Yup, more people looking at it because of the lawsuit. I did. LOL

I do agree with the officer that purposely blowing bubbles into somebody's face is an assault. He didn't raise his voice or anything he just told her to stop or he would arrest her. Not a big deal to me.

Wonder what we are not seeing since the video is edited.

I think the girl was trying to bait the officers. Who wouldn't be bothered by having someone blow bubbles in their face? The female officer just did a much better job than the male officer. I think he got a little over the top with his speech.

He definitely could have approached it better but if she was doing it on purpose and continued after being told to stop, that is a misdemeanor assault.

As afar as complaining or suing over those videos, well that is just silly.

The baiting argument is an epic fail in any professional department. Pros are supposed to be able to rise above such tactics. Those that can not, have no business wearing a badge. Any decent cop knows that.

Bubbles is both dumb and a loser. The Streisand Effect means this will follow him for the rest of his days and deservedly so. YouTube may have knuckled to avoid the wierdness of Canadian law with its weak protections for freedom of expression, but once things go viral, there is no way to stop it. The Internet has a very long memory.

Well his reaction to the bubbles was certainly fail but I would like to see you stand in a line face to face with someone who was constantly blowing bubbles in your face.
It was certainly an arrestable offense.

I think that if he had simply and briefly told her that she needed to stop blowing bubbles at them or she would be arrest, this wouldn't be a viral worthy video. The problem is his tone and all that "do we understand each other" stuff that made the video interesting.

Having already dealt with much worse in similar circumstances, the few bubbles (it was not a mass bubble attack) would be treated with a smile as other officers did.

The activists were eventually all arrested. There is a fair amount of whining going on about how it was done. Not sure how that will be dealt with in Canada. They have neither the freedoms nor the law & order mentality of the US.

Most of them were released without charge. And we DO have pretty much the same freedoms you guys have.

Johnny Law what you and several others here don't seem to realize "Officer Bubbles" was nowhere near her when she was blowing bubbles. According to reports I've seen he was at least 20-30 feet away. He approached her & got up in her face. There was never a bubble anywhere him. He was just being a douche. Hey I live in Canada maybe he'll sue me.
Good luck on that Bubbles.

The female cop didn't seem bothered by it.

If he was so bothered by it, all he could have done is ask her not to blow the bubbles, not threaten her with arrest, because it made him come across as a pansy.

The female cop is a pro, Bubbles obviously is not.

Did this guy just take the biggest mis-step of his life?

It seems like he used to be cheap male prostitute and was having flash backs of all those balls flying at his face.

Can't wait to see him try and sue me, the courts in Australia will laugh him out of the country.

Officer Bubbles, aka Officer Douche bag, aka Officer Adam Josephs. Suing YouTube has made these videos go viral. Epic fail. :-)

Hew certainly did fail, I never heard of the guy before he started suing people, what a loser, I can just imagine it:

"Mommy.... Mommmmyyyyy, make them stop, make them stop they keep poking fun at me..... please mommy"

Maybe he could not control the roid rage and all he could hear was the white noise in his head until he got an erection telling her off like that.

I don't think girls give him erections...

The girl was obviously naive, thinking that peace and love and bubbles would win over the cops.

She may have been a nuisance but not a threat.

I would probably get annoyed if she were doing that to me, depending on my mood at the time.

But this is where professionalism steps in. We all have to deal with annoying people in our jobs. If we snap at every one of them, we will probably lose our jobs or clients.

If that's how he handles a girl blowing bubbles, how does he handle a drunk guy making empty threats?

Well what did he do really? He used a harsh tone of voice with her. It's not like he beat her over the head with a nightstick. I wonder if she expected to be thanked for blowing bubbles in their faces?

I agree with you Johnny Law. He didn't even raise his voice. He told her if she did it again he would arrest her. Is he supposed to say pretty please with sugar on top?

Carlos,
Why was the lady arrested?

Good question Inspector. Why was she arrested? I noticed there was a bit of editing in the video which usually means she did something they don't want you to see.

She had a bottle of eyewash in her medical kit. The cop told her "you might throw that in an officers face & temporarily blind him" She also had a lawyers phone number written on her arm.

In a statement to the Sun, Winkels stressed she wasn’t arrested for blowing bubbles.

“The fact is that the bubbles had nothing to do with my arrest,” she said. “The reason I was arrested is because I was wearing a backpack and had a lawyer’s phone number written on my arm. This number was given out by lawyers, and they advised us to have it written somewhere on our bodies.”

The Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA) is urging "officer bubbles" to withdraw his suit because of it being "an attempt to further curb freedom of free expression".

The CCLA is the Canadian equivilent of the ACLU.

What a bully. Constable Bubbles Joseph is the kind of officer that leads people to think of police as pigs. The way he's behaving you can just imagine the flat-nosed snout on the man.

As always, this is one of many displays of POLICE ABUSE and retaliation from a guy who obviously has a deep and entangled sex problem. I personally think that his "Fagotness" went overboard of his capacity to think and foreseen that he actually could end him up in ridicule and in scornful mockery of the entire police department.
Yes, I said "Fagotness".....obviously he is a very potential fagot with that kind of attitude and abuse of power. As far as I am concerned he can go back where he came from because that is where he deserves to be.........Now.......SUE ME, PLEASE!!!

what an asshole!!....He has a grandeur complex, probably with a very tiny wienie or a very rotten brain.....This black pig is just PATHETIC!!!

"This black pig is just PATHETIC!!!"

There is no need racial slurs like this.
He's just a everyday jerk. If he had kept his mouth shut it would all be forgottten but because of the lawsuit we in the Great White North are still laughing at this moron.
Wanna sue me Officer Bubbles? Go for it.
