TSA Responds to Abuse Allegations With Videos
But controversy still boils over intrusive body scanners
The Transportation Security Administration has released video that seems to contradict allegations from a passenger that she was yelled at, handcuffed and had her ticket ripped in half by an enraged TSA official for attempting to opt-out of a body scanner check at Ft. Lauderdale International Airport earlier this week.
But there is a long segment in the second video in which the passenger is obstructed from view, meaning anything could have happened during those ten minutes before we can see her being led out of the passenger-area of airport free of handcuffs.
Regardless of what actually took place that day, it is clear that the controversy over those scanners and their manhandling alternative of getting patted-down will continue to increase, especially now that we’re heading towards the busy holiday season.
The passenger in question is Meg McLain of New Hampshire, a libertarian activist whom I had the pleasure of meeting the previous Friday as she was in Miami visiting the Liberty on Tour crew, who were also in town on the final leg of their national tour.
McLain walks into the frame at 1:13 in the first video and at :03 from the left side in the second video, only to not appear again until more than ten minutes later.
McLain described her experience in this interview with Free Talk Live.
She is currently in Gainesville attempting to catch a flight back home without having to go through a body scanner, which are quickly being implemented in airports throughout the United States.
McClain said she was handcuffed inside a roped-off area that is not visible on camera.
According to her Facebook page.
It happened in that roped off area. it has been a bit blown out of proportion by various accounts (ie i wasn't cuffed TO a chair or anything, and it was the cops, not the TSA). but that happened in the 2nd chair in the roped off area (the... part cut off in the corner of their video).
I think this whole thing with the TSA's response is trying to focus on 'flaws in the story' (which, one i told what happened to me, i have no control over what others say).
I'm going to just try to stay focused on the whole point of this incident: whatever happened to me as a response, no matter how large or small (which, even with the missing parts of the event that weren't caught in these camera angles was obviously excessive) is unacceptable.
I should never have been put in a position where I was forced to choose between naked photos or being physically molested. The fact that I questioned that practice and was given ANY kind of grief is outrageous. Nobody should ever have to deal with that.
While many Americans will no doubt write off McLain as anti-government trouble-maker prone to exaggerating her experiences, her story is not much different than what was recounted by a New York Times reporter earlier this month.
HAVING been taught by nuns in grade school and later going through military boot camp, I have always disliked uniformed authorities shouting at me. So I was unhappy last week when some security screeners at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago started yelling.
“Opt out! We got an opt out!” one bellowed about me in a tone that people in my desert neighborhood in Tucson usually reserve for declaring, “Rattlesnake!”
Other screeners took up the “Opt out!” shout. I was marched from the metal detector lane to one of those nearby whole-body imagers, ordered to take everything out of my pockets, remove my belt and hold my possessions up high. Then I was required to stand still while I received a rough pat-down by a man whose résumé, I suspected, included experience at a state prison.
“Hold your pants up!” he ordered me.
Even pilots have raised issue about the scanners, which are suspected of exposing people to unhealthy levels of radiation, according to The Los Angeles Times.
The unions that represent pilots for American Airlines and US Airways have urged their members to avoid the full-body scanners at airport security checkpoints.
The unions, representing a total of 16,500 pilots, say they worry about the health effects of being exposed, sometimes multiple times a day, to the scanner's radiation.
The unions say they also want a separate and more efficient screening process for pilots, instead of having them pass through the security procedures used for passengers.
"The whole system needs serious revisions," said Gregg Overman, a spokesman for the Allied Pilots Assn., the union representing American Airlines pilots.
It is understandable why the pilots would be frustated. After all, if we trust the pilots not to fly the planes into buildings, then why shouldn't we trust them to board the plane with nail clippers or a 5-ounce bottle of shampoo?
The tension will continue to mount as the scanners are installed at every airport in the country.
The New York Times states that there are currently 317 body scanners at 65 airports across the country, but there will be 500 by the end of this year and an additional 500 by the end of next year, eventually replacing the 2,000 checkpoints at all airports.
The scanners are produced by a Californian company called Rapiscan, which has received at least $200 million in stimulus money from the U.S. Government.
But they are a waste of money, according to Israeli security officials, who claim a savvy terrorist can board a plane with exposives despite having his genitals leered at by TSA officials.
The McLain incident has sparked a libertarian grass-roots movement urging people to opt-out of these scanners - even if it means getting physically groped - or just not fly at all.
The movement, which was partially launched by our very own George Donnelly, is also calling for a National Opt-Out Day on November 24, the day before Thanksgiving - which incidentally is the busiest traveling day of the year.
TSA, of course, claims that this is nothing but an over-reaction by a few extremists, but we already know they are liars.
After all, at first it insisted that the explicit images recorded by these scanners are disgarded as soon as they are viewed.
But then it was revealed that TSA requires these images to be saved for "testing, training and evalution purposes."
Or for merciless mocking purposes, as in the case of one less-endowed TSA official who was arrested after attacking his co-workers.
Negrin had been embarrassed and enraged by constant ribbing from his colleagues after a training session with a "Whole Body Imaging" machine, according to the police affidavit.
"The X-ray revealed [Negrin] has a small penis and co-workers made fun of him on a daily basis," according to the report.
So clearly, TSA has spent millions on useless, intrusive devices, but have spent nothing on training professionalism within their ranks.
And that is the real scary part. To think this lying, blundering agency is responsible for our safety in the air.

Well, the TSA is in charge of making it *look like something is being done* about airline safety.
Whether the TSA has *ever actually made air travel any safer* is extremely debatable.
Anyone with half a brain knows that these devices are purely to send a bunch of pork to a company somewhere, and to a lesser-extent provide excellent security theater.
That's fine because it happens all the time. What's insane about it is the pure intrusiveness of it. It should go without saying that living in a free society means...um...never having to be physically naked for the government. But we're willing to give that up so that a few folks can make a ton of cash, and because we're too cowardly to say that it's pointless.
Oh, I'm sure the SCOTUS would say "federal interest"...blah blah. But when he government takes up a huge percentage of the country, the FG is interested in everything.
I'd say write congress, but they're more cowardly than we are.
Fortunately either the gubmint will be bankrupt soon, or about 1000 nekkid TSA pics will end up on Wikileaks or a real terrorist will get throught with about 20 pounds of plastic explosives up his butt (the real kind, not hand sanitizer).
Then the sheer lunacy of these people will be revealed.
Very thorough story.
If the images are clear enough to make out a small penis, would that not constitute child pornography if children pass through the scanner? Especially if they save the images after the scan?
Last I checked, outside of collected evidence for a trial, possession of child pornography by anyone was a federal crime. I don't think the TSA has immunity here...
TSA is a Federal Law Enforcement organization and cops are allowed to have all the child porn they want. The MSNBC TV show "To Catch a Predator" had a Homeland Security Officer show up in Chris Hansen's kitchen with two six packs of beer looking to meet a 13 year old for sex.
Here's video of an FBI agent arrested twice in two different states for stalking women in restrooms and masturbating:
FBI agent masturbating
The second time it was a fourteen old girl.
If someone with a big dick goes through do they have to strip to make sure they are not a "dick bomber"?
Fascists are psychopaths so even the smart ones have difficulty seeing how stupid they seem in their attempts to spread fear.

You're obviously completely out of touch with reality.
While I dislike the whole security theater aspect of TSA, I can understand why they get frustrated at "opt outs". These workers have to move huge numbers of people through the line at a decent pace. I'm sure there is huge pressure to keep the security lines from bogging down. These personal searches probably take time and people away from the main line and slows them down.
I think this movement for everyone to "opt out" is just going to backfire. If it slows things down too much, the TSA will just remove the option to "opt out" during busy times.
Well this will be a first. It should come as a B I G surprise to "Johnny Law" that: I *** AGREE *** WITH *** HIM *** 100% *** !!!!!!! It IS nothing but a sham "let the public think we're really doing something to prevent a disaster" security theater.
If you really want to hear/read horror stories about TSA acts against the flying public go to..
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/travel-safety-security-222/
and read about (as a example), the young woman who had her "Nipple Rings" cut off with a set of "pliers" by the TSA before she was allowed to fly. Yeah.. that action really did stop the airplane from falling to the ground!
"Johnny".. as a quick question to you (being a LEO and all), how do you personally feel about the TSA ticket/I.D. water bottle checkers being dressed up in their brand new "Cop" like uniforms (which includes their shiny Gold Police type badges that say "US Officer") while calling themselves "FEDERAL" Officers?
I don't think you have to answer that one. I'd be pretty well P.O.'d too if I was in your shoes.

P.S. See there buddy.. I don't always come down on you. There are time (few that they might be), that I can see your side of things.
I'm surprised no one has commented on the irony that the company creating these invasive body scanners is called Rapiscan.
I always opt out. Some facilities take it better than others. I have had one low level TSA person claim it was up to them if I could do that. When I laughed at her and told her to get someone who knew what they were doing and/or her supervisor, she threw both the race and gender cards. I laughed a bit more and suggested she do as she was told. Supervisor was not happy, since a bunch of people started asking for opt out at that point, but followed procedures. However he denied me any venue to complain about his minion.
I fought and bled for our freedoms, I will not give them away lightly to high school dropout affirmative action hires.
I plan on opting out whenever I have the opportunity. During my pat-down I plan on pretending to enjoy it (oohing and ahhhing at all the right/wrong moments) or saying things to the effect of “Say my name B*TCH” or “Next time you have to buy me dinner first!”.
I was disappointed after viewing the TSA footage – you can tell the TSA folks behaved like goons, the one with the ticket yelling is clearly annoyed that she has no real authority, but the evidence here doesn’t really support her (Meg’s) version of events (granted it doesn’t fully dispute them either).
For those who think the negative stories you hear about TSA are all true, don't you have your own sense of observation or knowledge? The new technology is blessing and should have come years ago (9-11) TSA is using 70's technology in a 2010 world. The threat is not metel objects, it's explosives!!! a metal detector, shall I say... detects metal right??? plastic explosives are...huh plastic. I guess none of you have been horified or personally effected by 9-11. I'm from NYC and had family involved in the fall of the twin towers. I ask the million dollar question, how would you handle security??? Can you do a better job??? keep in mind this is the US, and everyone is ALWAYS offened about everything that slows them down or just plain day to day changes. Remember; this is the US of which I proudly and currently serve. Wake up!!! we need to do everything we can to deter the (bad guy) or leave the US. The US may not be perfect but, look around it's still the best out there.
You bring up 9-11, those assholes didn't have plastic explosives, they had box cutters, which should have been detected even with the security they had then. Sorry to disagree, but the radioactive, intrusive full body scans and tsa ball/tit squeeze are NOT a blessing unless you are into homosexual acts with people you never met before. Pardon my political incorrectness regarding profiling, but 80 year old Irish grannies don't need full body scans or their tits squeezed. How would I handle security? Well the first thing I'd do is arm the pilots AND co pilots, and please don't hand me any bullshit about bullets "depressurizing the cabin", I'll gladly risk that compared to having the terrorists take over the cockpit, then you won't need to worry about depressurization when the plane smashes into a building. Profiling? Yes I'd profile, if you come from a terrorist sponsor country, and I include Saudi Arabia on that list, you get extra scrutiny. Another idea which has been tossed around but never implemented is a "fliers ID", you go through a thorough background check and if it proves out you have no terrorist associations or criminal past you get your ID which allows you to pass with less security checks. The article mentions the Israeli security has already stated terrorists can sneak explosives past the full body scanners. BTW there IS something you can do about this. Don't fly. Mandatory business flights alone aren't enough to sustain airlines, if enough people opt out of flying for long enough there won't be a choice but to change the policy.
Building Seven (WTC-7) was brought down with box cutters?
Care to explain that?
Since you mentioned it building 7 wasn't brought down by a plane either. Plastic explosives??? Who knows?
There are 3 main parts to explosives: Explosive material, Power source (battery), and a fuse (which includes a primer and a detonator). Contrary to your belief, plastic explosives are not "plastic", but are organic material. X-ray technology views this organic material as orange in color. Plastics are very faint and insignificant when viewed on the x-ray, and metals (detonator/primer/battery/nail clippers etc.) are viewed as black or dark gray on the x-ray monitor.
When a combination of orange material (organic explosive material, or even clothing or books), dense black material (such as metal wiring, detonator/primer/battery, or simply an innocent hair drier) is viewed on an x-ray monitor, this calls for a bag search (unless the x-ray tech is really good at his/her job and can distinguish the objects on the screen). Swabs of the bag are also taken and placed in an "ETD" (Explosives Trace Detection) machine prior to the bag search to test for trace elements of explosives. When the test comes back clean, a bag search is conducted. If the bag comes back positive, then it is run through an x-ray again to determine the contents, the ETD is purged to reduce the chances of false positives, and an ETD swab is again conducted. If there is another positive result, the passenger is questioned (Floor stripper has the same specific gravity as TNT, and can produce a false positive). Bomb dogs and/or bomb squad is also called in.
Body scanners use the same X-ray technology, though the radiation builds up in people over time, making them a poor choice. There are also body scanners that use short puffs of air to "sniff" a person for explosives/gun powder much like an ETD (these were great, and non-invasive, yet are rarely used for some reason). Hand held metal detectors, to my knowledge, are no longer used for some unknown/imbecilic reason.
The TSA has a tough job, there is no doubt, though the most recent changes, including the authoritarian fascist attitude of many screeners today, is not going to fly. Groping passenger is NOT the answer. Asking passengers to be subjected to harmful x-rays is NOT the answer. 'Sacrificing freedom for temporary security' is also NOT the answer. The ANSWER, lies is better profiling of passengers, better attitudes in TSA agents, and better questioning techniques by TSA agents.
Source- I'm a former TSA Master X-ray technician/screener.
@ "I guess none of you have been horified by 9-11."
We all were horrified with what happened by 9-11, but that doesn't give the TSA wholesale reason (and so called authority), to run rampid over the flying public like it has in the past few years.
@ "How would you handle security???"
I darn sure wouldn't do it the way the TSA is doing it now. How many 3 year old girls were involved in 9-11, or 90 year old grandmothers in wheelchairs, or young breast feeding mothers, or.. or..? Hmmmmm.. I guess not a one, yet young Muslim males......
The TSA would rather NOT offend young Muslims guys through profiling, even though these were the type of people instrumental in 9-11.
@ "Can you do a better job???"
You're kidding.. right..!..? Anybody with half a brain tied behind their back can see whats being done by the TSA is nothing more than a Dog and Pony security show.. and if you think differently, then you've been drinking too much of their propaganda Kool-Aid! Get Real.
@ "keep in mind this is the US, and everyone is ALWAYS offened.."
Are you saying one shouldn't feel offended when the crotches and chest areas of the flying public are felt up before you can fly? If YOU think that's perfectly okey, then all I have to say to you is.. "you ARE one sick little demented puppy.. aren't you..!!..?"
How would YOU feel as a father if your 12 year old pre-teen daughter had her PRIVATES felt up and groped by some male sick-o TSA pervert.
Sorry.. I forgot. You're perfectly okey with her NOT being offended. After all, it's "anything goes" for security.......

Very well said on all points RCF!
Actually, in terms of airport security the US is not the best there is. We do things of little value and then act surprised when they do not work. Israel is the best and we should be following their model.
I give *some* of the TSA guys decent marks, but way to many are over egoed and under trained at best
I worked for the TSA from 2002-04. Back then, it seemed to be working fine (Not anymore inconvenient than it was when public sector security had the reigns), though I'm glad I quit when I did. Only a few weeks after I quit, Homeland Security started making changes in policy... Changes so idiotic, that if you thought about them for too long your nose would start bleeding...
After 9/11, I tried to re-enlist, though couldn't due to the injuries I had (no cartilage in my right knee). After getting denied, I decided the best way I could make a difference, and to defend my country, was to join the Dept. of Homeland Security TSA. I felt proud to be working for an organization whose mission was to ensure that something like 9/11 never happened again on U.S. soil. Sadly, the TSA, like all other government agencies, is just another bureaucracy that is destined for failure. Janet Napoli-tuh-uh-uh-uh-ano is so "eat up with the dumbass", that she is killing it even faster.
I'm proud of the work I did for the TSA. During my 2 years there, I recovered 7 guns, 1000+ knives, and 82,641 (give or take a couple) pairs of nail clippers. I am disgusted by what it has become.
I too had an experience with the TSA at New Orleans Amtrak Station. The dick as for my ticket stub after I got off the train and was finished arriving at my destination. I seems these idiots are under trained, collect a paycheck for doing nothing and protecting nobody. Why would they ask for a ticket stub when you finished traveling??
I just got the new scanner treatment. Shoes off, wallets, coins, keys, everything out of your pockets, hands up in the air. Just like a common criminal.
When are they gonna build some high-speed trains?
I flew today from a SoCal airport. As I entered the line they were running everyone through the visual scanner. I told the first TSA minion that I wanted to opt out. He acted like he did not know what I was saying. I raised my voice and repeated that I choosing to opt out of the visual scanner. He said just a second and went to get his supervisor. While we were waiting, no one got processed and several people asked me what was going on. I told them they had a choice, but would be hand searched instead. I also pointed out radiation and privacy issues. By the time the boss got there, there were three of us opting out. Boss argued with me but I said that he had to follow the national policy. We were directed around the visual scanner and told to wait. We had still had our carry ons with us. When no one showed up I went back to him and said since no one was checking us, could be just proceed. I got a mild expletive and he sent two people over to search us. We each got wanded and were let through. No bag scan, no feel up. Clearly they were not prepared for objectors opting out. Have to see what it is like on the return flight.
NO BAG SCAN!?! That is scary.
I think the terrorists have won.
The only way the terrorists will succeed, is if all countries, along with the entire population of each country, is converted to Islam. That isn't going to happen in your lifetime or mine. The terrorists haven't won anything.
They've at least won a very important battle, just not the "war." They don't even have to make a successful attack and we still terrorize ourselves in new ways as a result.
And this "converted to Islam" nonsense has been addressed more than adequately by LJM in the TSA Strip Search thread.
