UC Davis Police Chief Annette Spicuzza Needs To Be Fired Immediately

spicuzza_annette.jpg

The fallout of the UC Davis pepper spray incident continues with Police Chief Annette Spicuzza being placed on administrative leave today.

Hopefully that’s the first step in terminating her.

Spicuzza proved to be a liar Saturday as she tried to justify the pepper spray incident by telling journalists the officers were in fear for their safety.

This is what she told the Sacramento Bee:

“There was no way out of that circle,” she told the newspaper. “They were cutting the officers off from their support. It’s a very volatile situation.”

This is what she told the Los Angeles Times:

“The students had encircled the officers," she said. "They needed to exit. They were looking to leave but were unable to get out."

But if you look at the video below, you will see that the officers were never encircled.

And that it only became a volatile situation after Lt. John Pike flagrantly pepper sprayed a group of non-resistant students sitting on the ground.

And even then, the students remained defiant, yet non-violent.

Spicuzza, who has been UC Davis Police Chief since 2005, made $140,000 last year.

She described herself as having "high standards and strong ethics" on her LinkedIn page. We can look past that lie as typical resume embellishment.

But we can't look past Saturday's lie.

Spicuzza needs to be fired because her statements to the press are an ugly reminder of why it’s so hard to trust police officers these days.

She needs to be fired because if it weren’t for the cameras, we could easily see the students being charged with felony crimes based on her lies.

And she needs to be fired to serve as a reminder that we’re not going to tolerate the lies anymore.

Especially now that almost every man, woman and child is carrying some type of camera at all times.

And this is related to photography how...?

Cameras exposed her lie. But you know that.

Amen.

Long live the 1st Amendment and the Constitution.

Yes but remember life of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights is based on the peoples willingness and ability to preserve them.

"We have given you a Republic, if you can keep it"
-Benjamin Franklin-
"Yes, we did produce a near-perfect republic. But will they keep it?"
-Thomas Jefferson-

Now contrast this to the anti-American, anti-freedom, anti-Constitution and anti-person Wall Street robber baron plutocrats who have allocated themself absolute power:

"The present educational conventions fade from our minds; and, unhampered by tradition, we work our own good will upon a grateful and responsive folk."
Rockefeller Foundation Director of Charity, Frederick Gates

Yes, the founding fathers were weary of future Americans forgetting the freedom which they provided us... The people that sit in their safe homes and do nothing as the American people are raped by Wall Street and Politicians are the ones they were referring to. The people willing to stand up against tyranny are the ones they sought to empower and protect. It seems that the majority of our society has been seduced by the status quo and are too complacent, or ignorant to realize that these protesters are are striving to, "Keep this Republic" through the expression of their constitutional rights. The problem is that the people on the opposite side believe they are fulfilling the founders wishes as well.

Someone needs to remind this cold hearted individual that she was hired to work with students, students who were participating in a peaceful protest and executing their rights for free speech. Free speech a right that our country fought hard to provide to each and every individual.

What sort of lessons are we teaching our youth in this country when we spray toxic chemicals in the faces of peaceful, non-violent protestors who are students from the University of California system. They were executing their rights to speak out for the outrageous fee increases, increase amounts never seen in the history of the university system before.

Both the Chancellor and the police chief need to step down since they have no understanding of who they are supposed to protect and serve. They are there for the protection of the student population. These scholarly extremely high paid individuals should have used better rational sense when addressing their student population.

Lets hope someone in the UC system has the sense to address this mindless act with the level deserving of poor judgement they exercised in the way they handled this situation, and hopefully they will have learned from it, to better serve the community of their next employer.

I have watched this video a couple of times. A number of times I see protestors on two sides of the frame, but to be honest there is a narrow field of view and it is impossible to see whether they were surrounded or not.

So, the only lie was yours Carlos.....

michael, grow up.

the cop with the mace easily stepped over the kids and ceremoniously displayed the canister to the crowd and then began torturing these kids. this is one sick bastard that has zero regard for anyone but his brethren.

Surrounded? At 39 seconds, an officer...walks right through the line.

Watch it, again, michael.

Whatever Michael.

If the cops were surrounded and felt threatened they would have pepper sprayed their way out.

This is a video of one douche bag reveling in his giant can of "penis enlarger".

Cops are habituated to conjuring whatever lies are necessary to cover their asses and to excuse their behavior. They've gotten away with it for so very long; however, the camera is stripping away that perceived privilege.

Michael,

Go to the time frame around 1:04 and tell me how the vacant space behind the police and toward the street constitutes being "surrounded".

What you have to realize is that there are some people here (like "Michael") who truly believe that..

"Cops Can Do NO Wrong!"

It's unfortunate that even though photo's and video may show the truth of the situation, "Michael" continues to have blinders on to what really has happened.

1st for all the poster who claim all police lie, well congratulations you are engaging in stereotyping. I am a police officer and I don't lie to make or break any case. I swore and oath and take it seriously. Have I told a prosecutor I suspected another officer of fabricating details, you bet your ass. Now with that said was this protest volatile as depicted, by the police absolutely not . Was the use of pepper spray called for absolutely not. Should Pike be fired, absolutely if he was the ranking official in charge of the scene. Should Spicuzza be fired, no unless she was there. She could have been mislead by who ever was the commanding official on the scene (the one who should be fired).

I have to challenge this assertion. She staked out a position that can be shown objectively false without hardly ANY effort. The ranking officer should be canned TODAY, not tomorrow, not in a month, TODAY. The chief should have done a little due dilligence before making such a STUPID statement. Asking her officers what happened is one thing, lets be real, officers lie. I'm willing to give you the benefit of the doubt on whether you do, but having seen it for myself more than once there is no question, cops lie. The chief is responsible for her men and for telling the truth, if she was mislead i would still say it is her fault she mislead the public because the sheer volume of cameras available give her the ability to evaluate her officers truthfulness in a more objective way. Instead of doing that the willfully or ignorantly took an objectively false position and damaged her credibility. She needs to be fired from this job, she *may* be able to salvage her career in my eyes but it would require a lot of work..

"Should Spicuzza be fired, no unless she was there. She could have been mislead by who ever was the commanding official on the scene (the one who should be fired)."

She is a liar. It's her job to know the facts. She is responsible for her paramilitary's actions. They are a direct reflection of her command.

Just one recent itty bitty example of a cop lying.

Based on my own experiences and what I've read and seen in the news, on the internet, and in documentaries, police, prosecutors, judges, and politicians lie on a routine basis.

"Police lie. It's part of their job. They lie to suspects and others in hopes of obtaining evidence...."

Training Cops to Lie - Pt 1

It IS stereotyping.
However, would you have stopped your fellow officer from using pepper spray on the seated, non-violent students?
It is one thing to report something after the fact, its another to prevent it.

It may be an easier question to answer if we consider a policeman injuring or killing someone, but what if they are verbally abusive or issue someone a citation as an abuse of power? I have seen this happen. And I have seen the officer's partner stand there and do absolutely nothing, except look uncomfortable at what the other officer is doing. Is it a stereotype to say that most police officers will NOT stop another from abusing their power to a lesser degree, keeping in mind that to the citizen being abused, it is hardly trivial?

JdL

The only plausible argument here is over whether the cops involved are liars or cowards. Or, of course (and my own assessment) both. Sadistic, swaggering, cowardly liars.

Any cop who closes ranks and tries to excuse inexcusable actions by other cops, should be fired along with the cops who actually violated their sworn oath.

The protesters knew in advance they were to be sprayed.

"That's fine..."

The iconic video is a *lie*. But it wlorked.

In other news, today is the anniversary of the day right-wing Dallas killed Kennedy (one of the greatest left-wing propaganda efforts of modern times)

How does that make the iconic video a lie?

If I tell you I'm going to "shoot you" and then proceed to pepper spray you, does my announcement make it all OK?

The protesters knew in advance they were to be sprayed.

"That's fine..."

The iconic video is a *lie*. But it worked.

In other news, today is the anniversary of the day right-wing Dallas killed Kennedy (one of the greatest left-wing propaganda efforts of modern times)

"You have the right to free speech as long as you're not dumb enough to actually try it."

~Joe Strummer/The Clash

Remember this.

POLICE: We are going to spray you

PROTESTER: You mean us specifically

POLICE: Yes

PROTESTOR: That's fine

They then get sprayed.

I'm not sure why there is so much outrage, but it sure does make a nice propaganda video.

What a joke.

Some people are liars.
Some people are police officers.
that does NOT mean "all police officers are liars".

I give the benefit of the doubt when I can, but I do not presume honesty.. these days it's hard to do that with anybody.

But in general, the officers that do things like this are plain foolish.. in this day and age "the world is watching" is a fact of life.

Of course sometimes large segments of said world are either to ignorant or too stupid to understand the implications.

This was just on the news and apparently at one point the students did link arms and encircle the officers and wouldn't let them leave.

So they pepper sprayed them later as punishment?
Why not arrest them and let a jury decide their punishment?
Any way you look at this spraying those kids was wrong.

Why ask me that? I wasn't there. I was just commenting on the appearance that the national news seems to have video that backs up the Chiefs statement.

My God!
Had there been more students, would the police have felt threatened enough to shoot their way out?

Awwww, why fire her? She is currently being punished with paid vacation. Isn't that enough. Oh the humiliation for a public servant. Paid vacation...oh the humanity!

I do not see a problem with what they did. After the spray they immediately started to arrest them. When going to arrest a large number of people who are not being cooperative what is wrong with weakening them to prevent them from fighting. The cop was 100% justified.

Too bad you are wrong Oscar.

The University is paying the students medical bills resulting from the spray attack.

And all charges have been dropped.

That's because the University is run by a bunch of pussies.

Medical bills from getting pepper sprayed? What kind of sissies were out their protesting?

Yes, and michael jackson settled out of court for child molestation charges - does that mean it didn't happen.

OJ Simpson was found not guilty, but held liable in civil court - does that mean it didn't happen.

The fact that the University chose to pay the bills is on them - what do you expect from a liberal school. The DA didn't prosecute, wow - welcome to the world of law - happens all the time - doesn't necessarily mean anything.

LJM

Why do you need to "weaken" suspects who aren't violent? Only weak cops need to do that.

They were resisting arrest. They were told they were going to get sprayed. Rather than using force where somebody could get hurt they used pepper spray for the protesters safety.

Ah yes. Another critical thinker.

As if resisting those who show themselves to the world as nothing more than ignorant and evil felons, with badges and a fist full of steroids, is the wrong thing to do. (except for the twat who actually attacked the protesters. He is storing his cut of the steroids stuffed under his shirt. Obviously.)

Congrats to you Sir. Quite the thinker you are.

Case and point. The idiots running the University were not the ones who dropped the contempt of cop charges. No changes, no conviction, no resisting arrest.

Keep it up though Oscar. Everyone does something well. And your special skill is obviously acting as a sycophant apologist for thugs, thieves, murderers, and tyrants.

Because they are pussies and afraid of being sued.

Oh, and by this post I take it you are the highly educated critical thinker in the room. Your initial comments generalizing about cops show how closed minded and one side you are. Oh, and you use the word "twat" so eloquently that I see you must have a Doctorate in wisdom. So, critical thinker, how do you analyze this (and I expect this is gonna be good folks):

http://newsbusters.org/blogs/noel-sheppard/2011/11/24/uc-davis-student-a...

I was interested to see that you replied to a blogger who asked about how this related to photography by stating: "The camera exposed her lie". No Carlos, wrong once again. The camera propagated this lie. Photojournalism tells a story, but one needs to be conscious of the morale necessity to put facts with the photo. Images are always open to interpretation. So, with that said, how come you and the rest of the liberal media are not commenting on this?:

http://newsbusters.org/blogs/noel-sheppard/2011/11/24/uc-davis-student-a...

What, no sensationalist enough for you? Pixiq not gonna pay the big bucks for this story Carlos?

They were surrounded (shown on video and from this protester's own mouth), they clearly told the leader of the group that they would be pepper sprayed, to which he replied, "just us, yeah go ahead" (on video). The entire group covers up in preparation as the officer holds the cannister up for all to see. Yet, oddly enough - the liberal media (you Carlos) only show the pieces of this footage that sensationalizes the occupy movement and makes the cops look bad. You didn't do any investigation, you did ask any questions, you don't know anything about police use of force, but yet you feel morally ok about posting portions of video and commenting as an expert - as you were there. In representation of protesters everywhere - Shame on you Carlos Miller!

http://newsbusters.org/blogs/noel-sheppard/2011/11/24/uc-davis-student-a...

Silence from the illustrious Carlos. Interesting!

Ah,Dominick, was it really clever of the officer to calmly pepper spray the protesters in front of all those video cameras? Have you ever heard of a sucker punch? As for NewsBusters.org, if you can find a site that exposes both left and right wing lies, let me know about it. But NewsBusters.org seems pretty partisan.

Someone needs to remind this cold hearted individual that she was hired to work with students, students who were participating in a peaceful protest and executing their rights for free speech. Free speech a right that our country fought hard to provide to each and every individual.

Someone does need to fire the UC Chancellor - but not for the reasons you think. She should be fired for suspending cops when she has failed to gather all the facts. The above video speaks volumes. Just as Carlos only puts his money making sound bits on this site, you can see from the included video that it is a characteristic of mainstream media to do the same.
