Using Visual Literacy to Promote Local Causes
Your visual literacy can be a powerful voice in supporting local issues.
For the past year now, my brother Bubba and I have been working on a documentary film about a creek where we grew up. If all goes as planned, a lake will soon flood the bottomlands where we roamed as boys.
This half-hour documentary takes a look at the creek from a historic, ecological, and personal standpoint and hopes to serve as a reminder of the heritage that is lost if the lake becomes a reality. Using both still and video gear, we made several trips along the creek to record the ecosystem and relive our memories.
This is a personal project that we completed on a budget of about $500. While it didn't cost a lot to produce, I hope the value of documenting a disappearing part of Texas is priceless.
The first video is a piece that a statewide television program did about our project, while the bottom video is the entire documentary.
Since we first showed the piece, we raised the awareness of the issue in the area. So much so, people are rethinking about what's more important — woods or water?
