Video shows London police shoving man from behind before he died

Update: The police officer who shoved the man before he died has been suspended.

London police had their hands full last week with hundreds of people demonstrating in the streets, sometimes violently, against the G20 summit of world leaders.

But they singled out one man who had nothing to do with the protests -  a newspaper carrier who walking home with his hands in his pockets – when they shoved him from behind for no apparent  reason, sending him sprawling face first into the pavement.

Ian Tomlinson appeared shocked and surprised but otherwise not critically injured, according to a recently surfaced video posted on the BBC website.

However, he died of a heart attack moments later.

Before the video surfaced, police were saying that Tomlinson “suffered a sudden heart attack while on his way home from work.”

But then a New York fund manager who had recorded the footage came forward with the video because Tomlinson’s family “were not getting any answers”.

The G20 stands for the Group of Twenty Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors described by Wikipedia as:

A group of finance ministers and central bank governors from 20 economies: 19 of the world’s largest national economies, plus the European Union (EU). It also met twice at heads-of-government level, in November 2008 and again in April 2009. Collectively, the G-20 economies comprise 85% of global gross national product, 80% of world trade (including EU intra-trade) and two-thirds of the world population.

As they brit newspaper said they probably never know if that had something to do with his heart attack. It’s called a trauma induced heart attack.

If you think back a couple of years ago to the Dick Cheney hunting accident when Harry Whittington got shot. Whittington had a heart attack after the shooting.

I was hit by a car in 2004 and was monitored for 2 days for signs of one of these heart attacks. A friend was also in an accident with chest injury and actually did have a heart attack as a result.

Seems the heart does funny things it’s thumped.

Where is the rest of the video, I read somewhere else that the crowd was interfering with the people who were giving him CPR. If that is true they should be charged. Why don’t we see that footage.

He was obviously disobeying their orders. Taking his time to walk away and walking side to side. Hands in pocket isn’t always a good thing in the eyes of the police. He walks away and collapses further down the road, sounds like an existing medical problem.

jones,

it looks like the home office has decided that the cop that did the shoving was probably in the wrong.

Oh, he’s guilty of having his hands in his pockets. Let’s trample him. Oh, he’s taking his time walking away. Time to trample him. Oh, not walking straight away. Time to smash him to the ground.

Now if the crowd saw this guy get shoved it would be perfectly reasonable for them to assume the cops were attacking him when they were giving him CPR. But that’s not what happened according to the independent witnesses. They were throwing “missiles” at the police. When they realised someone was hurt the cry went out that someone was hurt stop throwing things. The protesters did block the emergency vehicles for a while.

Duane – Now if the crowd saw this guy get shoved it would be perfectly reasonable for them to assume the cops were attacking him when they were giving him CPR.

Come on Duane, you can’t really believe that, just how stupid do you think those people are. If a cop walked up to somebody who was doing CPR on somebody and tasered them and then claimed they thought the person was beating the other person you would have a field day. That is a little over the top even for you.

LOL, jones you took the bait. That one was just to get a rise outta you.

According to some witnesses that were interviewed the crowd was initially being difficult with the police when they started responding to this guy falling over. They were throwing stuff at the police. But when the people up close figured out they were helping the guy they started yelling for that to stop and it did.

There are people that do have conditions that make it more likely for them to have heart attacks. I don’t dispute that. In this case when this guy was knocked to the ground it is likely that he went into shock. It is also possible that his heart was bounced around inside his chest.

We could argue this for ages. It is a chicken or egg argument. Assuming he had some predisposition to have a heart attack he could have lived for years and died without having one. He could have also dropped dead the following day depending on how seriously ill he was.

I’d say it is likely he had a predisposition and the knocking to the ground severally agravated this condition. As the British papers have said perhaps we will never know.

jones when a man is walking away, even if he’s going slow he is still leaving. you might not like that he is going slow. I’ve been in tense situations, I can understand how the cop was upset. But that doesn’t give you the right to push the guy from behind and beat him with a baton. If the cop was emotionally involved he wasn’t being professional. His judgement and ability to continue in the job should be questioned. His mates didn’t do the same thing he did.

No matter whether he had a condition or not, no one has the right to treat people like these pigs in yellow coats treated him.

This guy should be sent to jail for manslaughter.

Duane, I am saying this cop is not responsible for this man’s death. Was the pushing absolutely necessary, probably not, did the guy ask for it, absolutely.

I don’t know what was going on that day that caused the police to be there in the first place but it looks like some type of crowd/riot control was going on. When 8 cops, some with dogs, are telling you to leave then you should probably leave instead of being a smart ass about it and playing games.

I’m still not buying your explanation for why they interfered with the cops who were trying to give him CPR. Even if what you say is true that doesn’t explain why the crowd interfered with the emergency vehicles that were there to help. I think everybody in that crowd who can be identified as interfering with the life saving efforts of the police and fire should be prosecuted.

jones,

I have to say this. The only way someone asks to be shoved by police is if he shoves them first. Someone pushes a cop, I’m not going to get upset if the guy gets pushed to the ground and handcuffed, he asked for it. If the cops continue after they are handcuffed or delay handcuffing to continue beating on them I’m going to be upset. But if a cop pushes someone first like this case I’m going to be even more upset with the cop. To me it’s worse then someone pushing the cop first.

The G20 meeting was that day. It’s always a very political event. There is always a lot of protesting in the streets, happens every year.

What I can figure out from reading the various reports this guy sold newspapers in the area. He was done selling for the day and on his way home to watch the football (soccer) game which took him past the police in question. I don’t know what his interaction with the police was, that doesn’t seem to be in any of the reports. Perhaps they were blocking his normal route and he questioned them as to why. His head was down and he had a submissive posture as he was walking away. That’s why I say he should have been left alone.

The part about the CPR was the part where I was pulling your leg. I wasn’t being serious. Of course the crowd shouldn’t have interfered with them giving him CPR. However if you’re 15 deep in the crowd and throwing stuff at the police you can’t tell what’s happening, can’t tell they are helping someone that’s hurt. In this demonstration they always throw stuff at the police, it’s done all the time in Europe.

Once the cry went out that the police were helping someone that was hurt and not arresting someone that stopped. The same with the blocking of the emergency vehicles.
