Warmth of Sepia vs. Cool of Black & White

Processing to Emphasize the Action

When I'm processing images, I often consider the potential strength and timeless appeal of an image in black and white, particulary if I want to place visual emphasis on an expression, a gesture, or a spontaneous moment. What I don't typically consider, is the use of sepia tone.

Using an image processing application such as Aperture on your desktop (or the Photofx app on your iPhone), try varying the intesity of Sepia tone to apply a light, warm color wash on your image. Light sepia toning works well when you want to minimize the distraction of color and place visual emphasis on the action of your image. An alternative to black and white, sepia offers a warm approach to achieve a similar effect.
