Weekend Perusing: Photoblog Extravaganza!

I love photoblogs. I subscribe to about 58 photoblogs at the time of this posting. Photoblogs offer a glimpse into the world of a photographer that a gallery or flickrstream just doesn’t seem to convey. I think it’s because you can really see a photographer evolve over time if you follow long enough, whereas a gallery is supposed to just show you the best of what the photographer has to offer. I don’t always want to see the best. I want to see the struggles with creativity and the ebbs and flow of inspiration that can occur as a photoblogger struggles to maintain consistency in production. I want to see their everyday life like a window into their soul.

Over at Digital Photography School Natalie Norton discusses the positive aspects of why you should start your own photoblog. She has some really stellar points in the article and most of them are exactly why I started one a while back. Her most important reason, in my opinion, is that accountability and consistency with photographing everyday will only make you a better photographer. It’s absolutely true.

So if your ready to start a photoblog, and the time is now, you can read a simple guide on How to do a Successful Photoblog by Chris Perillo.

Anne Helmond wrote an entire article series about using WordPress and Flickr to create simple photoblog. That’s actually how I started my first one way back when and it’s super easy to do.

If you have no desire to use WordPress and you just want a place to handle the hosting and everything else I recommend looking into Photoblog.com. It’s ridiculously simple to get started.

This week’s photoblog highlight is Aperture Image. Chris lives on the Isle of Wight and seems to be surrounded by extraordinary beauty as evident in his photography. It’s easy to tell that he takes great care when composing his images and his recent explorations in HDR have been very good indeed. The photograph above titled Chapter II is an example from his website but can also be found in our flickr group. Thanks for the inspiration Chris.

I also don't know if mine qualifies as a photoblog. Since the posts I publish are the ones I think are good, but not the everything.

Wow, I'm honoured Damien, thank you. I hope my images encourage others, and I'd agree that producing your own site is the way to go. I feel it makes you think about your photography more and offers the opportunity to display images how you want them seen.

I have one, with the aim of sharing some of my process stuff and hopefully (eventually) getting feedback as well as promote myself. (And just to have a place to point my domain name too). The ones I pick to write up are kind of random - it depends mostly on what I feel like talking about and how much time I have to write something on any given day.

Good article Damien. I'm also subscribed to a lot of photoblogs. I like to see the work of other and discuss them. They also can give me inspiration to shoot certain subjects.

Great work, Damien. Very interesting site. I started a project which captures many great photoblogs. ILovePhotoBlogs.com.
I list photoblogs of all shapes and sizes. Newbies to Pros. I currently surpassed the 400 mark. Check it out. I'd love to hear what you think.
