Where do you stand on the political compass?

I was checking out Johnny Law’s blog the other night and discovered that he is actually quiet a centrist when it comes to politics.
At least according to the Political Spectrum Quiz he took. I took the same quiz and confirmed what I always knew, that I am left of center with a strong libertarian bent.
Johnny Law, on the other hand, leans more toward the authoritarian side. As if we should be surprised by that.
The quiz requires you to answer about 50 questions and it takes a few minutes, so I was hoping some of you would take the quiz and post your results, just to get an idea of where my readers stand politically.
I suspect the results will reveal a significant number of libertarians.
If the comment section does not allow you to post the code, then send it to me and I’ll add it to this post.
Update: Below are the ones which readers sent me the code for.

If you want, you can email me the code at carlosmiller at magiccitymedia dot com (I write it that way to prevent spammers from spamming me) and I will include it in the post.
You are a right moderate social libertarian.
Right: 5.54, Libertarian: 2.49

Big surprise …
Rich is a far-right social libertarian. He is also a non-interventionist and culturally liberal. Rich’s scores (from 0 to 10):
Economic issues:+10 right
Social issues:+10 libertarian
Foreign policy:+9.42 non-interventionist
Cultural identification:+6.36 liberal
Why make this personal?
I disagree most of the time with J.Law also. I find his reactions to be a knee jerk response, without regard for the circumstances. I find similar reactions from several of your readers on the other side of the issue, but I don’t see you calling them out and making a front page blog entry about them. This is cheap and beneath you. If you want to post your own info, go ahead. You encourage the wrong kind of discourse with this behavior. Shame on you.
You are a center-right social libertarian.
Right: 2.77, Libertarian: 9.84
In some ways I think I’m more center left, although idealistically and philosophically, I’m probably more to the right on economic issues. However, realistically we don’t live in a free market capitalist society, and I fear that advocating it too often ends up just strengthening the corporatist society we actually live in.
I am slightly left, slightly authoritarian.
You are a center-left social moderate.

Its actually not far off from where I would have put the X myself.
Mostly, I just try to be a tolerant and open minded.

I first saw a variant of this quiz back in the early nineties (on paper!). There were even some duplicate questions from that quiz to this one. It was being promoted heavily by a staunch Libertarian coworker, and appeared slanted to make you seem more libertarian than you would self-identify, and thus more receptive to overtures from libertarian messages. (I don’t want to ignite a political debate about libertarian vs. democratic vs. republican, etc., but I do want to point out that this quiz is biased, and intended to make more libertarians. In fact the whole concept of the 2-D political grid vs. a 1-D left/right continuum is their invention.)
For that reason, I am not posting my results here.
I used to be moderate libertarian, I’m finding now I am middle-right libertarian. I ocassionally wonder if it’s the Milton Friedman I’m reading, the recent government(s), or simple age that is pushing me to the right of where I was five year ago.
Or is the general population moving left around me?
The quiz labeled me as a far-right social libertarian, however I disagree with the definition of the terms left or right libertarian. I self identify as a left-libertarian, that is I believe that the only human interaction that can be considered ethical behavior is voluntary and based on mutual consent. I don’t believe that we can achieve less government through the state political mechanism. I consider a “right” libertarian to be someone who supports the the government but will single out government programs as unnecessary. The former is a more idealistic and principled take on libertarianism. The latter relates to libertarian Republicans like Ron Paul and the majority of Libertarian Party members.
William´s last blog ..Was the H1N1 Swine Flu genetically engineered and patented by the Government?
You are a far-right social libertarian.
Right: 9.1, Libertarian: 9.19
Like William, I have to disagree with the labels of left and right, which is what these two-axis charts are supposed to avoid.
I support both economic freedom and social freedom, for both individuals and groups of individuals who wish to pool their money together in a business, or pool their moral feelings together in a church or other group.
I tried to answer the questions honestly, as asked, without inferring motive. What was not clear about the “how important” scale, is whether or not it implies you want government to do something about it.
Don’t you think you’re being a little uptight?
This is not an attempt to call somebody out because I disagree with them. This is just a fun way to get my readers involved and to see where we all stand on that quiz.
Johnny Law had his results posted on the front page of his blog, so it’s hardly anything he is ashamed of.
Besides, if I found the quiz on his blog, it’s common blogger courtesy to give that blogger credit.
I was thinking it would show that some of us are closer in ideology than we would like to admit.
No. Given that your regular posters have a habit of “calling for” J.Law to come and routinely ridicule his posts, and your post is on it’s face a comment about him, I find it distasteful.
I’m not saying it’s an invasion of his privacy, he clearly posts it for public consumption. But you’re encouraging the wrong things. He’s certainly no more predictable than other posters who I won’t call out by name.

Probably an average Canadian.
Johnny Law is a big boy. He can handle the posters who regularly call him by name to disagree/ridicule his posts.
Right now, he’s the only one on this site that continually defends the police. Before, it was Jones and before that, it was Officer Brad.
Despite the fact that he does provide a contrasting opinion than most people on this site, I welcome him here and I’m glad he posts here frequently.
It’s always good to see what goes through the mind of police in these incidents.
And if you’ve noticed, not a single reader has commented on Johny Law’s political compass. They are, in fact, providing the numbers behind their own political compass (which I even offered to post in the original thread).
So I don’t know what it is you think I’m trying to encourage other than what I’ve already stated I’m trying to encourage, which is nothing else but reader involvement.
Note that the scale is not necessarily calibrated so that zero is the most moderate or unbiased position. TGAP Dad’s concerns can be addressed by comparing results to the average if the group is large enough, or by comparing one result to a second result. It is a mistake to try to interpret the values of a single test result in isolation, the absolute numbers are relatively meaningless. Ha ha.

You are a right social libertarian.

I must say, though, that many of the questions were indeterminate… They touched on topics I feel strongly about, however I am not much of an absolutist; there are almost always valid exceptions to every rule…
I am a left social libertarian.
Left: 3.86, Libertarian: 7.69
I am a far right libertarian:
Right: 7.15
Libertarian: 4.39
The questions are unfair in many cases.
The abortion question for example. Even as a staunch libertarian, I believe it should be 100% ILLEGAL because I believe that the unborn is a human and therefore has rights. Protecting those rights is among the few proper roles of government.
Access to health care? What does that mean. Of course people should have the right to access health care, they just don’t have the right to make someone else pay for it. It’s a loaded question.
The retirement safetynet and stock market question was loaded as well. We shouldn’t even have a social security program, therefore our “retirement safety net” as a nation shouldn’t exist. It was hard to answer that question because there was no correct answer for me.
As for the gay marriage questions , I don’t think the state should be involved in marriage at all so that was a tough question to answer too.
Too many loaded questions and not enough depth.
I always thought I was a libertarian, now I know. Seems most of us readers are!

You can talk yourself into thinking this is fine, but it’s not to me.
J.Law isn’t treated ok by your posters, and I think this post is a cheap shot by you, also. No problem, it’s not the worst thing ever done, or even the worst post on this site. It’s also your site.
I have a criticism here, I’ve made it, and you disagree. Fine. Again, your site, inappropriate or not.
I have to reply to your last comment here because the CommentLuv did not provide the reply link in that comment.
I really don’t see this being anything near a “cheap shot.”
Maybe Johnny Law can tell us whether he was offended or not.
I don’t even know where I’d put myself now. I assumed the right aspect was just in reference to economics. But people seem to have all kinds of ideas as to what that means. I just people should be able to do what they want if it doesn’t violate anyone’s rights. And I’m not going to defend giant corporations who have long outlived their founders in the name of economic freedom.

I appreciate the support torgeaux but I’m not offended by this posting. I was surprised by it but don’t mind. I do wish some of Carlos’ readers could show a little maturity when responding to my posts but hey, that’s the Internet.
Good to see that J.Law wasn’t bothered (just “surprised”).
Of course, I wasn’t here defending J.Law, I’ve seen he’s more than capable of standing up for himself (even when clearly wrong, as are all who disagree with me, of course). I found it both surprising, and inappropriate. But hey, I find lots of comments here to be that, just not usually the base post.

Well I’m glad we got that sorted out.
I wonder what results we would get if JL asks his readers to do the quiz.
I’m betting his readers would mostly fall on the authoritarian side, regardless if they fell on the left or the right.
And this would explain a lot. That it’s not necessarily about liberal vs conservatives in these matters. It’s another side of the spectrum altogether.

To my unrestrained libertarian friends…
Are you morally OK with doing nothing to stop someone from distroying their lives with drug abuse? That’s where libertarian thought breaks down for me. I’m all for individual rights/responsibilities but can’t see how someone could look in the mirror knowing they could have intervened in someones life and chose not to.

There’s a difference between intervening in someone’s life, and having the government intervene in their life.
@John L.
I have a couple of friends who have taken their lives and flushed them completely down the toilet as a result of their drug abuse. Short of beating the shit out of them, I’ve done everything within my power to try and help them out, and still they refuse it. People are going to do what they want. Just leave them alone, they aren’t hurting anyone except themselves.

Which is about what I figured it should be. While I agree that the quiz is biased, personally, I made allowances for the inherent bias, and wasn’t surprised where i ended up.
I do suspect that an additional bias is inherent, in that only federal-level issues are addressed, as well, and if local issues were added in (that is to say, dealing with the governement on a daily-type basis, whether police, DMV drones, school boards, etc.), the results would likely be drastically different. Especially here. F’rex:
“Should the police be forgiven for occasionally stepping over the line of the law in the course of performing their duty, because the job is stressful and involves so many personal judgement calls?”
(Not sure if that’s irony, sarcasm, just making a point, or what; but I’ll leave it in as it relates to some of the topics raised here.)
I would have expected my self to be more to the center… Right: 4.42, Libertarian: 4.11, Foreign Policy: -2.55, Culture: -2.97.
