Where Would You Go On a Photography Vacation?
We’re going to open up a reader question to the community because I don’t travel as much as I’d like and didn’t have a paritcularly great answer for her.
From Lesley:
Hey, Damien
I was wondering if you could give me some advice. I just recently fell into some money and am in need of a good vacation. I love photography and thought I could go somewhere to take great pictures. I prefer something on the warmer side but am open to suggestions.
Thanks,
Lesley

I thought the question was a little open ended so I asked for a little more info. After some back and forth emailing let’s just say that you can totally use your imagination. I told Lesley I’d be opening it up to you guys so get creative. Money is rather abundant so feel free to go a little crazy, just not too insane.
Basically, if you could go on vacation with photography in mind and you had a rather large budget, where would you go and why?
And no, Lesley isn’t willing to take anyone with her…I already asked.

Being a landscape guy, If I had the time and money, New Zealand would be high on my list. Somewhere warmer? The Maldives in the South Pacific is beautiful.
Autumn is a beautiful time of year in the Midwest.
WIsconsin Dells area, House on the Rocks
OR
Taylors Falls in Minnesota is absolutely STUNNING!
that is if you can wait that long
or better yet
spread your small fortune around and visit as many interesting places as you can
Can you do underwater shots?
Go to Australia in November (right now is there winter, coming on...or FALL at the moment...
Australian Falls must be beautiful too :)
oops
Tunisia is absolutely beautiful, has a wide range of landscapes from coastlines, to salt lakes, to rock caves, to marketplaces to the Sahara desert! Plus, it is relatively unsaturated by tourists, making the photography opportunities even more unspoiled. That would be my first choice.
Surely South Africa has to be right up there!
- Wildlife including the Big 5!
- Landscapes ranging from your typical safari-type scenes to mountains, desserts and amazing coast lines.
- Amazing cities like Cape Town
- Culture deluxe - not called the rainbow nation for nothing!
- Townships and smaller communities where you can shoot 'real' people.
Truly a photographers paradise with options galore. And no... the crime is NOT that bad!! :)
Oh yeah... and it is warm!! :)
If I had a load of money left for photography vacation, I'd probably fly to New York, or some other interesting city on the easy coast, then rent a car and drive all the way westwards to the west coast. There's lots of interesting landscapes on the way; different cultural styles, varying city/town sizes, long stretches of highway in the desert.
I don't know if it matters, but I'm from Europe (Switzerland).
I'm sorry but if it's lots of money, then Monte Carlo, the Cote d'Azure and that side of Italy are a must - in the right hotels, obviously. :-)
New Zealand would be my first choice as well. I've always wanted to go there for the beautiful scenery.
I would recommend Washington D.C. I think that would make a great subject for a photo essay. Juxtapositioning images of the seat of power with the poorer surrounding sections, the halls of justice with the overcrowded prisons etc. A lot of money might just get you the "behind the scenes" view of Washington that would be compelling.
Puerto Rico.. well that would be my dream vacation.. I was there two years ago prior to my eyes being aware..it was filled with such culture and gorgeous scenery.. that is my two cents.. :)
I find it hard to recommend a specific location without knowing what she likes to shoot. With that in mind, I came across a post a while back that might spur some inspiration:

My personal choice would be NY. With such a wide range of opportunities there, from the Zoo, to central park, to Cityscape, to street candids, to sporting events. Take a boat tour and you'll find even more!
1 month or more in China without any hesitation at all. And rather than me telling you why, let me show you a few examples why.

Plus many more.....
If it wasn't for the warm climate requirement I would have suggested Nunavut, Canada. http://www.nunavuttourism.com
What fun it is to dream......
As a landscape photographer I'd say - New Zealand, the land of my dreams... :-) Though Cuba wouldn't be a bad option too.
New Zealand and South Africa would be the first 2 places in my list.
YEH, what a great site and informative posts, I will add backlink - bookmark this site? Regards.
