I am a begging digital photographer and debating whether to buy an EVIL camera or a DSLR, is four-thirds not so good? I was looking at the EP series cameras and I liked them, but now I am wondering...
Just saw this question. I have owned an Oly E300 and now an E3 (I have not owned nor really even shot with a micro 4/3).
All cameras have their advantages and disadvantages, depending on the way you want to use them. In my experience, the 4/3 DSLRs offer excellent image quality with excellent mid-range priced lenses. However, I don't think they are the best choice if you want to snap kid birthday parties indoors or hockey games in the arena or concerts. Not that it can't be done, but the larger sensors probably offer better performance in low light (at higher ISOs).
I've heard that the sensors in the more recent oly EP series is superior in this regard than previous 4/3 sensors. But you will get fine photos with 4/3 is you learn the camera and its limitations (just as you might not want to lug a bigger camera and lens system everywhere with you.)
As an E lens user I find the debate coming down to depth of field. With 4/3 sensor you get more. The normal lens is a 25mm! So this is great for available light candids, but not good for those who like dropping the background out of focus.
Not sure if I fully understand this thread but the PEN cameras use the same size sensor as the E-series digital SLR cameras.
The term micro just means a smaller camera and a smaller lens.
The sensor size is not different however. So, a normal lens for any PEN or E-series camera would be a 25mm (50mm equivalent when you do the so-called focal length multiplication factor of 2x)
Perspective is the same for 4/3 25mm lens versus 50mm on 35mm film or 80mm with 2-1/4. But what surpizes me is how depth or field makes a difference. It's nice to get the background out of focus and I think this is what is pulling videogaphers to Canon's motion. Although the chip is hotter, than Oly 4/3'd, they can drop the background out more along with take advantage of all the lenses available. Note, the Sony microDSLR NEX3 doesn't use the 4/3 but went to the bigger sensor and is still tiny. My favorite is Panasonic Lumix G10, G11 DSLR which has a viewfinder so you can see in bright daylight and is as tiny as the OlyPEN, plus has a hot shoe for extra mic or flash.
I know this is old. The difference is no mirror in the micro 4/3's so the camera as a whole can be made smaller but it is still the same size sensor. Vis a vis, the Standard 4/3's has a mirrored system.
